Color pictorial endpapers; b&w illustrations throughout. Light rubbing to spine ends and lower front corner, evidence of slight bump to upper edge of front board, else an internally clean, bright copy in original color pictorial dust jacket (light wear at folds and edges, some light rubbing, price-clipped, no medal affixed). Signed by the author, two-time Newbery Medalist, Joseph Krumgold.

First edition. 1954 Newbery Medal Winner! This is the story of a twelve-year-old Miguel Chavez, who yearns in his heart to go with the men of his family on a long and hard sheep drive to the Sangre de Cristo Mountains--until his prayer is finally answered, with a disturbing and dangerous exchange. Based on the author’s 1953 documentary film and then made into a feature film in 1966.
