This book by a well-known commenter on the value of personal and professional leadership development, Drew Dudley, lays out his philosophy for how people should think of themselves as leaders and how they can sharpen their leadership skills every day. He advocates that we each consider every new day as “Day One” when we start over on pursuing our leadership journey. He argues that we must take concrete daily steps to improve our leadership skills. For example, we need advice for when we are on the “Edge of the Bed.” This is what we might tell a loved one who is undergoing some trauma and needs specific advice they should follow to turn things around. The last section of the book is the most valuable one. Often, leadership books are full of good leadership attributes that we should work on, but they lack ways to “operationalize” them. Dudley tackles this head-on in the last section, laying out each rule he wants everyone to follow and then providing examples of actions that we should take to meet those objectives. While the whole book is worth a read, this is the most effective section, making this short book well worth the time and energy.
